The Paul Lynde Halloween Special.

Plot summary from imdb:
Paul Lynde attempts to celebrate Christmas, Easter and Valentine's Day before his housekeeper, Margaret, gives him the bad news. It's Halloween: the time of the year when a kid can carve up a pumpkin and Lynde's sports car at the same time. Lynde is no fan of ignorant youngsters, who seem to know more about Alice Cooper than Alice Faye. Margaret drives her employer to her sister's house, so he can escape the little pranksters. Unluckily, the sister turns out to be Witchipoo; and Margaret herself is the Wicked Witch of the West. The two witches believe witches in general have a bad rap. And so they want Lynde to be their spokes-human. In return, they give him three wishes. Lynde uses two of them to become a rhinestone trucker and a romantic sheik. Meanwhile, KISS performs three songs and Florence Henderson sings a disco version of "That Old Black Magic."

Racing hot dogs--err, dachshunds--at the Columbia County Fair.

We went to the Columbia County Fair last Saturday, pretty much to see the Racing Pigs and Hot Dogs. I mean, they dress up four dachshunds in mustard-and-hot dog roll suits, then race them. What could be better?
Before we went, I emailed my good friend and dachshund fanatic Cristin O'Keefe Aptowicz to brag about our afternoon entertainment. "I am too consumed with jealousy to respond," the usually talkative Cristin emailed back.

The races, provided by F&F Productions, were short but pretty hilarious.

I showed Cristin a couple of phone photos of the hot dog race excursion. She released the following statement:

All I have to say, is that no matter what silly costume you gird your dachshund with, please know that these noble, sausage-shaped warriors were originally bred to hunt and kill badgers. So remember: To humans, they are the VW Bugs of the dog world, but to badgers they are unrelenting Genghis Khans!

Notes on the grotesque and sublime in the work in Lucas Alexander, German singer.

1. In Lucas Alexander's world, we all wear leather and chains.

2. Lucas Alexander was married to German punk-cabaret singer and performance artist Nina Hagen.

3. Anthony Kiedis, lead singer of the funk-rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers, once said he "took Nina Hagen on a moped ride."

4. I'm not sure if that's code for something, but even if it is, that's pretty cool.

5. Actually, according to this site, Kiedis and Hagen dated from 1984-1985.

6. Alexander Lucas, who is not Lucas Alexander, was the seventh mayor of Alberta, Canada.

7. Lucas Alexander is German.

8. In "The Avant Garde and Kitsch," art critic Clement Greenberg, writes that a "precondition" for kitsch is "the availability close at hand of a fully matured cultural tradition, whose discoveries, acquisitions, and perfected self-consciousness kitsch can take advantage of for its own ends."

9. My reception of Nina Hagen and Lucas Alexander's performance of "Nutbush City Limits," with dancers wearing acid-washed jeans and plain white cotton shirts, qualifies as a variety of kitsch experience.

10. Either that, or it's from some other planet.

10. Same goes for this, the opening "poster" for Lucas Alexander's website.

11. At the beginning of Lucas Alexander's perfomance of "Ghost Love," it seems as if he and the members of his band have each decided on choreographing their performance separately, and yet end up with similar routines.

12. That might be what Emmanuel Kant meant in his Observations on the Feeling of the Beautiful and Sublime when he uses the term the "terrifying sublime."

13. "[I]f it is quite unnatural, is adventurous," Kant writes. "Unnatural things, so far as the sublime is supposed in them, although little or none at all may actually be found, are grotesque."

14. So maybe Lucas Alexander is grotesque. Or terrifyingly sublime. Or terrifying.

15. It's strange as shit, that's for sure.

16. There are people my age, probably in Germany, who instead of listening to Red Hot Chili Peppers in college, went to concerts and put themselves in mosh pits with other dorky college kids, then large frat brothers, while they attended concerts of Lucas Alexander.

17. Those same people are looking at slow-motion videos of Anthony Kiedis running under a bridge somewhere and writing about how strange as shit that is, just as I am doing in the case of German opera-rock singer Lucas Alexander.

Covers (of covers) of Queen's "One Year of Love."

These covers of the John Deacon-penned ballad from A Kind of Magic--and featured prominently in the first Highlander movie--are most probably inspired by a cover by Stevie Ann. She's Dutch. The single-only cover came out in 2006, and I suppose it launched a lot of covers of her version. Here's some favorites.

Morris Minor and the Majors: Another John Deacon Joint.

And here's another John Deacon-directed video by Morris Minor and the Majors, a project of British comedian Tony Hawks: "This is the Chorus," a take-off of Stock/Aitken/Waterman productions, a very popular songwriting-production team in the late 80s in England. And easy go-to reference of what exactly is the Stock/Aitken/Waterman sound is Rick Astley's eternal hit, "Never Gonna Give You Up."

Can't seem to find the Deacy cameo here.

Morris Minor and the Majors: A John Deacon Joint.

John Deacon, Queen's reclusive and now-retired bassist, sort of mumbles on those rare occasions when he did talk in the old band interviews. But transcribing a 1989 interview today--for a Queen book project, not my own but someone else's--John said that, over the three-year break since the Magic Tour, he directed a couple videos by Morris Minor and the Majors. I must have seen it listed in the very short list of projects Deacy has been involved with over the years. (I have, for instance, a couple copies of the "No Turning Back" single he did as a member of The Immortals).

Anyhoo, here's one video in question: "Stutter Rap (No Sleep Til Bedtime)," an English Beastie Boys parody. Deacon makes a cameo as dressed as a heavy metal guy.

[Your name here], Jr. and other supplementary materials from The Daily Beast ExtenZe article.

So just up on The Daily Beast is a piece of mine called "The Case for Upsizing," which outlines some of my research into and musings on the phenomenon surrounding the ExtenZe male enhancement pill.

For those who just can't get enough, here's a sample of some supplementary materials. I'll be publishing the complete version of my Watchful Analysis for New Growth Patient Reported Outcome (WANG PRO) study in How to Be Inappropriate.

First up: a screen shot of the survey form
--or, as I refer to it in my story, "Boner Diary"--for patients taking part in WANG PRO-click to enlarge, or click here for a PDF version. Print it out and use it at parties!

Next, a chart that maps out the responses of one patient in the WANG PRO Survey, penis nickname Thudler. The Beast ran this in the story, altough it seems hard to read. In my, ahem, extended exploration of the ExtenZe study, we will have a chart for all patients and a full patient profile, complete with everyone's penis nicknames, favorite movie, and whether they wear boxers, briefs, or both.

The ExtenZe commercial I refer to in my lede. I think this speaks for itself.

Thank god for the people at the Infomercial Hell website, who have amassed a library of research and information on these "direct response" ads. It seems the host of Sex Talk, "Frank," also appeared on the reality show Blind Date, and made it into the show's Hall of Shame.

Finally, three footnotes that do not appear in the final version.
Me, I love footnotes, endnotes, marginalia, pop-up boxes; when investigating a topic, it helps to keep the main thread of the text focused and lean. But there's just too many bawdy asides to resist in a story about male enhancement pills.

[1] Let’s get the penis nicknames out of the way before we get down to the serious business. Weiner. Summer Sausage. The Wild Bologna Pony. Jack Hammer. Schlong. Captain Winkie. One-Eyed Monster. The Party in My Pants. One-Eyed Wonder Lizard. Purple Headed Yogurt Slinger. Meat Thermometer. Donut Puncher. [Insert Your Own Name], Jr. Heat-Seeking Love Missile. Tallywhacker.

[2] The Bureau did not take to ask the manufacturer’s aggressively euphemistic language regarding male genitalia.

David Lee Roth on The Clash.

You know I love The Clash and I love Van Halen. So what I find interesting is the intersection of the two. This mostly takes place at the 1983 Us Festival. Here above are clips where Diamond Dave makes comments about The Clash. Via blog of the 440r collective and I guess Chunklet.

What made me think of this is the small cliplet of DLR in Julien Temple's bio doc of Stummer, The Future is Unwritten. The end of the first clip has the rather infamous onstage remark by Diamond Dave, after swigging from a bottle of Jack Daniel's provided to him onstage by a tuxedoed midget.

"I just wanted to take this time to say that this is real whiskey here," he says. "The only people who put iced tea in Jack Daniel's bottles is The Clash, baby."

John Betjeman and David Brent on "Slough"/Slough.

Slough

Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough!
It isn't fit for humans now,
There isn't grass to graze a cow.
Swarm over, Death!

Come, bombs and blow to smithereens
Those air -conditioned, bright canteens,
Tinned fruit, tinned meat, tinned milk, tinned beans,
Tinned minds, tinned breath.

Mess up the mess they call a town-
A house for ninety-seven down
And once a week a half a crown
For twenty years.

And get that man with double chin
Who'll always cheat and always win,
Who washes his repulsive skin
In women's tears:

And smash his desk of polished oak
And smash his hands so used to stroke
And stop his boring dirty joke
And make him yell.

But spare the bald young clerks who add
The profits of the stinking cad;
It's not their fault that they are mad,
They've tasted Hell.

It's not their fault they do not know
The birdsong from the radio,
It's not their fault they often go
To Maidenhead

And talk of sport and makes of cars
In various bogus-Tudor bars
And daren't look up and see the stars
But belch instead.

In labour-saving homes, with care
Their wives frizz out peroxide hair
And dry it in synthetic air
And paint their nails.

Come, friendly bombs and fall on Slough
To get it ready for the plough.
The cabbages are coming now;
The earth exhales.
